Why Communication & Storytelling

Working with stories is an indispensable skill for today’s communication professional, who understands that successful communication is based on interaction and connection.

Yet sending, sending, sending is still the most common form (70%!) of communication in organizations. However, that is no longer enough in this interactive era where everyone is part of communication and has their own role in it. As a communication professional, the challenge is to be both the connecting link and to switch from sending to having a conversation with each other. That way, people do get involved and in motion.

With the storytelling method you make sure that communication is truly interactive. Because of these four essential success factors:

1. Stories connect people

This has always been the case. People have always shared stories because it helps them relate to the world around them, gives meaning to what they do and experience and transfers knowledge. Just like language, stories profoundly belong to us. Unsurprisingly then, a good story is decisive in persuasive communication: it is not the characteristics of a certain product or service or the rational arguments that explain a change that win people over or help them come to a decision, but the story that accompanies it

2. Storytelling teaches you how to listen

When listening begins, sending stops and communication starts. You will discover what is truly going on (‘undercurrent’) and adjust your communication accordingly, so at every level a successful connection can be established.

3. Storytelling shows what is really going on

When you listen to the stories that are being told in and around your organization, you will gain insight into what is really going on. Based on those insights, you can advise management about interventions or a (communication) strategy. In other words: you will connect the undercurrent with the upper current. You offer solutions for conversations that do not seem to get started and allow the ‘cascade’ (line communication) to flow once again.

4. Storytelling aligns internal and external communication

What you invest in internally, will effortlessly continue externally. Here, stories are the bridge, the motor, the mirror and the compass. Because they connect people with goals, move people, offer recognition and give direction. The right stories will make employees and other stakeholders happily fulfill an ambassador role for the organization.
